The University of Hertfordshire is located over two main sites in the small town of Hatfield as well as a third campus in St Albans where Law is taught. All are in Hertfordshire, which is just outside the northern edge of London, and many have state of the art facilities.

The purpose built, £120 million, De Havilland campus, completed in 2003, has an excellent learning resources centre plus outstanding sports facilities and lots of open green spaces. It also has stylish, new accommodation offering 1,600 en-suite rooms.

Hertfordshire has seen explosive growth, especially compared to many other new (1992) universities in the UK, with student numbers growing steadily every year, attracted by the excellent learning resources and graduate employment records.

The student’s union at Hertfordshire provides an employment agency offering students part-time and casual work, which many students find useful.

This is a large university, with around 22,000 students in total, many coming from the local area and about 12% of undergraduates coming from outside the UK or the EU, with China providing a large proportion of these students.

The local area has plenty of beautiful English countryside to enjoy. Hatfield is a small town, with excellent road and rail links to London as well as other parts of the UK. There is a large shopping mall here called the Galleria, which is very close to the De Havilland campus, and many other small shops, restaurants, pubs, etc.

Accommodation is guaranteed for first year students. All halls are self-catering, all have high-speed internet access and all are very affordable, despite most of them being newly built. Estimated accommodation and living costs in Hertfordshire are £6,500 per year.

English language admission requirement is IELTS 6.0. There is a wide selection of pre-sessional English language programmes and international foundation programmes available, see the list at the bottom of this page for more details of these courses.

NOTE that students from China who have completed senior high school and obtained an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher can gain DIRECT admission onto most bachelor degree courses at The University of Hertfordshire. This means that, so long as a student’s level of English is good enough, they do not need to take a foundation course before starting a degree level course, as is the case at most other UK Universities.
