Newcastle University Newcastle University

Founded in 1834, Newcastle became an official university in 1963 and has since built up an impressive academic reputation across the wide range of subjects it offers. The university has a friendly, cosmopolitan feel and is a consistently popular choice for students from all over the UK and abroad, attracting a high proportion of students from the independent school sector.

The campus is located right in the centre of this vibrant North East city, close to the huge Metro Centre shopping mall plus all the various entertainment options Newcastle has to offer. The campus facilities are generally excellent, including plenty of 24 hour computer rooms, 2 main libraries, a modern sports centre and an excellent student’s union (6 bars and 3 night clubs) and careers service.

Academically strong in all subjects, but those worthy of special note include Medicine, Media Studies, Music, Law, Architecture, Art & Design, Business, Biosciences, Pharmacy, Computer Science and all types of Engineering. Many graduates leave Newcastle to work in the health sector, as well as many that find careers in the civil service and banking and finance sector. As many degree courses here have been established with input from industry, Newcastle graduates can find it easier to find work in their chosen field than others.

All in all, an excellent university in a famously student-friendly city.

Total number of students is about 19,000.

The city, Newcastle upon Tyne, is the largest urban area in the North East of England, with a population of around 260,000. As well as the huge Newcastle College, there are two well-established universities here, Newcastle University and Northumbria University. Newcastle is consistently judged to be one of the best student cities in the UK, and with friendly locals, low costs of living, plenty of affordable housing, various famous attractions, the largest shopping centre in Europe (the Metro Centre) and much more besides – it’s not hard to understand why.

Newcastle has a unique blend of old and new, historic and modern architecture, ranging from the 700 year old Alnwick Castle (where Harry Potter was filmed) to the amazing new Millennium Bridge and Quayside development. Restaurants of every kind can be found here, along with the UK’s 4th largest China town, as well as an enormous number of pubs, bars and lively nightclubs plus other entertainment venues.

All (non-local) first year students are guaranteed accommodation, most of which is very close to the campus and includes both catered and self-catering options, and some offer en-suite bathrooms.

Estimated accommodation and living costs in Newcastle are low, just £7,500 per year and tuition fees are around the national average level, which adds to the appeal of this famous university and city.
